Free nationwide professional development for anyone interested in self improvement
What is Podcast CPD?
In light of the Coronavirus pandemic affecting the world, here at Robin Hood Multi Academy Trust, we began to think of professional development for staff within schools. Naturally, up and down the country in 20/21, when delivering INSET, there will be an emphasis placed on health and safety and we think that we may be about to embark on an academic year where staff pedagogy and development becomes a secondary thought to the very natural focus of keeping schools operational. With this in mind we have created PODCAST CPD #PLNCPD for trainee teachers, teachers, TAs, support staff, leaders and anyone who has an interest in education. It’s completely free and anyone can access it.
We know that many people who work in education are passionate and forward thinking and as such would not want to sit still with their own personal professional development. We know that, as we step into an academic year where what we don’t know far outweighs what we do know, 7me and energy will be at a premium for everyone. Based on the fact that we want to give staff the opportunity to better themselves and yet there are many 7me constraints we came to the conclusion that we would offer a development programme for any staff member interested that is centred around some of the very best podcasts across the globe that we can find.
There have been many great online training events offered by schools, universities, Trusts and colleges during the pandemic and we are full of admiration for our colleagues. We do feel though, that much of the learning offered online is essentially passive learning and as such, at the heart of our PODCAST CPD will be the opportunity to network and discuss key learning with fellow professionals who care about education. Here is how it will work:
The PODCAST CPD will run over a 10 week period beginning aVer October half term and concluding at February half term (this will be cohort 1). We will then run a cohort 2 which will begin in March 2021 and conclude in May.
You will receive a listening list which documents 10 key podcasts you’ll need to listen to in a specified order (typically this will be one per week). After each podcast you’ll be asked to journal a short reflection (this will take 15 mins max) which draws out what you have learnt and what you plan to ac7on (if anything) as result of the podcast. At weeks 2, 6 and 10 we will host a nationwide Zoom conference that allows everyone participating within the development programme to network and discuss their learning. Each Zoom will last for 30 mins and will include a short 8 minute conversation between a range of influential guest speakers before splicing out into break out groups – these will run for the remaining 22 mins and will allow for small groups of people to discuss their learning from the podcasts, the conference and also to network. The aim is that the sessions are informal, informative and allow like minded people to come together to share their thinking. We plan to place people into regional break out groups so that we can ensure that there are opportunities for relationships to be established and grown beyond the PODCAST CPD.
Across the 10 week development programme you will essentially have the opportunity to listen to stimulating podcasts (and here’s the great thing) at times that are convenient for you (it could be whilst driving, washing up, walking the dog, at the end of the work day, at the start of the work day) which fit around your lifestyle. This will naturally lead to some new learning and thinking and so the Zoom meetings at regular intervals will allow you to share these thoughts and see what others took from it. Ultimately we want to provide an programme that inspires people to become better versions of themselves in the spirit that we are all developing.
If you haven’t listened to podcasts before and are unsure as to how they work or how to access them then don’t worry because we have created a help sheet HERE for you to access.
In short we aim for the CPD to be easy to access, thought provoking and inspiring and that it helps you connect with other people and become a better version of yourself.
What skills will be developed within podcast cpd?
When we began to think about how to curate a list of great podcasts to inspire and move our thinking forward our starting point was around what skills and attributes we wanted to focus on and develop. There are many skills and attributes that we could have built in but in the end we decided that simplicity was key and so we will ensure that across the 10 week programme we focus on the development of four key areas:
Vision – if you are going to make a difference in your area of expertise and the wider world, whether you are a member of the office team, TA, NQT, teacher or even someone outside of education, you’ve got to have a vision. If you are striving to get better, improve, make a difference or climb the career ladder then it is important to visualise and have a clear vision of what you want to become or create.
Reflection – being able to reflect with as much objectivity as we can about our own performance and learning is central to growth and self improvement. To really improve, you have to be able to reflect on how you are operating.
Self Regulation – the ability to regulate how you respond to certain circumstances in work and also in life is a key attribute to leading a happy and fulfilling life both professionally and personally. Self regulation is a critical attribute when operating under pressure.
Self Improvement – the ability to improve yourself as a person and a professional is the very foundation for growth and the starting point for all personal development. When looking at commonalities for successful people, be that in work or on a personal level, they all have one thing in common – they have a thirst and hunger for self improvement.
How will the four skills be developed within the podcast cpd?
Every podcast selected within the 10 week programme will have be chosen because it specifically helps to move our thinking forward in one of the four key skills of vision, reflection, self regulation and self improvement. In some cases one podcast may target more that one of the key skills within the programme and so, to help you know exactly which skill the podcast is developing, we will use the icons above to make the links explicit and clear.
After you have listened to a podcast we will then encourage you to journal your thoughts on what was discussed and how this might move you forward in your learning and personal growth – the journal template we have created for you to use allows for specific focus on targeted skills. Within the Zoom meetings we will also place and emphasis on at least one key skill which we will use as a basis for discussions between participants.
PODCAST CPD COHORT 1
The Podcast CPD list below has been designed to be listened to in a certain order and we would urge you to follow the course list not only in order but also inline with the dates set – this will allow all course participants to discuss the relevant podcasts during the targeted Zoom meetings at various points. We also think that it is important for course participants to have processing 7me to mull over what has been discussed during a podcast and reflect – this is why we are targeting people listening to one per week.
